If you’re looking for the best source of resveratrol, you should consider the cranberry. Not only is it high in resveratrol, but it’s also chock full of proanthocyanidins like grapes and green tea. Is it the best source of resveratrol though?
There are several sources of resveratrol; the main ones are cranberries, blueberries, peanuts, grapes and a plant called Japanese knotweed. Cranberries and blueberries are the least talked about sources of resveratrol; whereas, the other three seem to get all the press.
You’re probably saying “resveratrol in peanuts?, Japanese knotweed? I’ve never heard of that”. Well, you’re about to hear a whole lot more about resveratrol and peanuts. The marketing folks in the peanut industry are delighted resveratrol is getting such a good reputation. You’ll soon see resveratrol on the labels of Planters cans.
Japanese knotweed might not be familiar to you, but if you’ve ever taken a resveratrol supplement, you’ve likely ingested it. It’s one of those ‘invasive’ plants that just can not be killed. It’s actually on the Invasive Plants list on most states, but it happens to be the best source of resveratrol. Supplement makers use it because it grows anywhere in any climate. You don’t need special soil for it and it continually regenerates itself at the root level.
Cranberries are good, but they’re no Japanese knotweed. If you see “cupsidatum” on the ingredients section of your supplement bottle – that’s Japanese knotweed. As for cranberries, they’re not typically grown in hot, wet climates. They require acidic soil and some maintenance. While their resveratrol level is similar to blueberries and peanuts – they’re not as easy to grow as the knotweed plant.
